The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois'
KidneyMobile® Free Screening Program

Two and a half years ago, the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois (NKFI) launched the nation's first KidneyMobile®, a custom motor coach offering free mobile education and screening services to Illinois communities. Our mission centers on identifying individuals needing treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic kidney disease, as well as raising greater awareness to the complications of these diseases in hopes of preventing their development or progession. Since hitting the road in November of 2005, the KidneyMobile® program has screened nearly 9,000 people! Unfortunately, more than 70% of those screened learned they had abnormal results, which is why the NKFI continues to provide free screenings and education on prevention.

The NKFI offers free health screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Each participant will have a private consulation where he or she will receive the results on the day of the event (if the screening includes a full blood draw, they will receive their complete results within three to four weeks). Finally, participants are invited on board the KidneyMobile® for an educational tour and short video featuring people whose lives have been touched by kidney disease.

When a group requests the KidneyMobile®, a committee reviews the request for its fit with the program's mission and the site's ability to meet hosting guidelines and expectations. All requests will receive a response within 2-3 weeks. To request theKidneyMobile®, please complete this form and return it to the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois.

In order to use the NKFI's resources most efficiently, the KidneyMobile®'s priority is to provide services to underserved communities, who currently have little or no opportunity for preventative screenings and also to individuals most at risk for these diseases, specifically Latinos and African Americans. Priority is also given to organizations that can provide technical volunteers, lab work for the blood draws, and events that are focused solely on chronic kidney disease.

Since launching the KidneyMobile® in November 2005, the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois has screened more than 8,000 people for diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease. The goal is to identify individuals with these health problems so that they can seek treatment and prevent disease progression.

The KidneyMobile® has traveled nearly 25,000 miles across the great state of Illinois, bringing free screenings and providing education and, in many cases, immediate and critical referrals to members of our communities.

“I was totally blown away by the KidneyMobile® exhibit. Actually seeing
how much fat and sugar were in certain products was (an) eye opening experience.
Not just for me, but for my 14 year old daughter who is also obese.  We learned how
to make healthier food choices.  I had a real scare with the [abnormal] hematuria
and am being monitored by my physician closely.  If the KidneyMobile® had not caught this,
God only knows how long this would have gone undetected.  Thank you so much for this program.”

- from a survey returned by a patient screened in Cairo, IL

"Since finding out about the diabetes, I have lost 23 pounds. I continue to
exercise daily (treadmill, back, weight training). I check blood sugar levels
2 times a day...The free testing program is great! "
- from a letter written by a patient screened at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL

"Thank you for the free kidney screening. I did do a follow up with
my doctor and she treated me for a urinary infection.
Thank you again...for your fine work."

- from a letter written by a patient screened at MacNeal Hospital in Riverside, IL
